Did you by chance cut your grape vine vines or maple trees within the last month or so and discover the sequent hemorrhage? Luckily, although this seems to be a rattling worry to us, it really does n’t harm the plants at all. Just let them bleed, it will stop in time. There is absolutely nothing you can do to halt it, as you will rapidly reveal if you ever try. Next year cut them in December or Jan so they have a chance to heal over.

Do you have any hedges that worry you because they are not thick and as much of a screen as you wish? Now is the time to do something about it. Unfortunately hedgerows that are open from the bottom from deficiency of sufficient branches will rarely get more thick by pruning only at the top. The only satisfactory way to do by deciduous shrubs is to cut back them within an column inch or two of the primer coat. This should be done immediately.

To help along the new growth, utilize any complete commercial plant food in a strip two feet broad on both sides of the hedge using four hammerings for each 25 feet of hedge. As the new growth starts, cut it lightly after every four to six inches of growth to get as much branching as possible near the primer coat.

Hedges that are too tall but otherwise satisfactory can be pruned back to the trusted altitude. It is a good thought to geld them six inches to a invertebrate foot lower than you wish them to be to allow for the new growth. The sooner this pruning is done, the more opportunity there is of the new buds developing just back of the points where the branches are cut back.

Yew hedgerows that are too large can be pruned very gravely and even though there is very little green went away back of them they will develop new buds and fill in. However, other evergreens such as hemlocks, spruces, pines and even arbor-vitaes can only be cut back to the point where there is enough green went away back of the cut to create new growth. They will rarely develop new buds on the old branches. This is why the point is always reached sooner or later where hedges of these evergreens have to be taken out and substituted.

Selecting Tools.

For those who are purchasing new garden tools, especially if they are new gardeners, it will be well to check with experienced gardeners to find out what’s good and what is n’t. Every year there is a crop of new kinds of tools, but surprisingly few of them are still on the market a few yrs later. It’s still passably difficult to beat out the conventional tools that we have been using through the years. In person I still like a round channelized digger with a little care with a D on the end for doing by soil and most excavation. For planting and transplanting smaller plants I like a diminished spade with a steel only about six inches broad and a foot in length. They are light and easy to handle.

For a trowel, either atomic number 13 or steel is best with a little shank rather than some of the unwieldy long shanked ones that are so often sold. If you want a digger, use a digger and not a long trowel. Although many recommend a spading fork, mine is hanging in the garage idle year after twelvemonth. A steel obeisance rake is still handy for pointing soil and digging up globs and removing stones. The only other long dealt tool that’s really convenient is a four tine pitch fork for doing by scrap and forgets.

If you have a vegetable garden you will probably be using a hoe, but in the flower garden, mulching should practically do away with the need of a hoe either the little narrow bladed onion hoe or the conventional hoe. And if you have to use a pick mattock to your soil, it’s an indication that you need Garden Tools Best Price rattling amounts of organic matter and possibly coal ashes to loose it so that it can be shoveled or spaded without a choice. Whatever tool you may buy, get the very best quality for they should be practically a life time investment.

Whenever I interview with a new client, I like to tell them that going green doesn’t have to be expensive, sacrifice luxury, or result in a home that says “70′s hippie lives here”. I also tell them that I won’t force anything on them, but I will present the options that include sustainable choices and let them decide from a place of information. Eco-friendly materials and products have changed so much in the last 5 years that often you would never know one just to look at it. As more homeowners request and install recycled glass countertops or dual flush toilets, the industry is getting the message loud and clear – and they are responding by creating more interesting, unique, and beautiful materials for us to choose from.

Choosing locally sourced products and materials for projects is often a popular choice with the homeowners because it saves shipping costs, and helps to integrate the home with the site. It is nice as a small business owner to support local craftsmen and other small businesses. In the case of custom cabinetry, it is much easier and faster to work with a local shop that can measure, install and follow up on the project.

One of my favorite Small Luxury Homes green products, which we used in this remodel in Scottsdale, Arizona, are recycled content glass mosaic tiles from Oceanside Glasstile. They are a very environmentally conscious, as well as socially responsible, company located in San Diego. This project also features a custom powder room countertop with integrated sink cast from recycled fly ash concrete, and manufactured locally by CONCRETE INTERIORS. The water-feature/faucet is a sensor-activated automatic faucet that was retrofitted and customized to create ribbons of water. This not only saves water but also creates a “Zen-like” atmosphere in the space. We upgraded all the appliances to more efficient Energy-Star models, and used low-VOC paint throughout. The clients loved that there was no “new paint smell” immediately. While the eco-friendly changes we made in this project were minor, they also were cost effective and will contribute to future cost savings on utility bills.

I was very happy with my purchase of the Kohler toilet tissue holder. It is made well and just as described, like all of the Kohler products I have purchased. It installed easily and is very sturdy and is easy to change the roll of toilet paper. The only negative is the price but as Ingersoll-Rand 182LNA1 they say you get what you pay for and this was worth it.

The humble sofa has to be one of the most loved pieces of furniture in the country, offering salvation from a hard day at work Cream Corner Sofa and comfort from the cold winter outside. But for a sofa to live up to all our expectations there are a number of key points to consider when choosing your ideal living room throne.

Two or Three Seater?
Whilst you want to be cosy, there’s a fine line between comfy and cramped – establish how many people the sofa needs to accommodate on the average day. If it’s the only seat in front of the fire then it may well need to cater for you, your other half and the dog, not even considering the children – so bigger the better. One word of warning however, if you’re going ‘big’ check on access issues before purchasing.

Vintage or Modern?
This will traditionally tie in with the size question – aside from classic designs such as Chesterfields, vintage sofas tend to be on the smaller size, whilst modern options are generally designed to fall in line with modern living requirements. Corner sofas are a great way to accommodate the whole family and fit neatly and efficiently into contemporary living spaces.

Fabric and Colour
Once you have the style and size sorted, the fabric finish is the next consideration – most manufacturers offer a wide variety of choices with varying cost implications. Sofas can be a big investment and whilst it may seem prudent to opt for the cheapest finish, make sure you’re going to be happy with your choice in six months when the seasons have changed, and twelve months when you fancy a theme change in the living room. Adaptability and longevity should be the key here.

Spic and Span
I made the hideous mistake of buying a cream sofa, despite being a notorious red wine spiller and owning a sofa-loving, black dog – however my get out clause is that the covers are removable and machine washable, plus I opted for the fabric protection scheme. If you’re going vintage or simply can’t find the model you want with removable covers, consider positioning it away from frequent passing traffic, which tends to result in grubby corners.
